Gays Underrepresented in Malta’s Politics and Media

The editor of Malta Gay News, Malta’s alternative news network has expressed concerns that gay and lesbian people are "massively underserved" in Maltese politics and media. This is especially evident in the current run-up to Malta’s election in which only 1 candidate has made his sexuality public. Considering the statistics on homosexual prevalence, the gay community is not getting proper representation in Malta’s government and public representation.

"If Malta’s politicians do not properly engage and portray the way Malta is in the 21st century, rather than the way a small number of people imagine it might be, then the future looks bleak indeed."

Recent research by Malta Gay News found that gay people and their lives are seven times more likely to be portrayed in negative terms by the local media and that positive images of gay life are unlikely to appear in entertainment programmes. Homosexuality is rarely featured in factual programmes such as documentaries or news.

In 200 hours of primetime broadcasting there was a no more than six minutes of "realistic portrayal" of gay and lesbian lives, this occurred on “Psikologos” in December of 2007 when local psychologists refered to homosexuality as a “normal” state of being.

"The objective of the media should be nothing less than a fully inclusive society. Where all minority groups are valued and respected, and every individual is able to simply be who they are.”

"It's clear that Malta is not there yet.”

"Just one example is the casual use of homophobic language by mainstream radio DJs. This is too often seen as harmless banter instead of the offensive insult that it really represents."
